Hong
Kong is one of the most vibrant and energetic places in the world. The
views around the harbour, especially when looking towards the island are
stunning and a must when visiting Hong Kong. To see some pictures of the
harbour and other aspects of Hong Kong do take a look at some of our picture
galleries on Hong Kong. There is an excellent choice of
hotels for travellers to choose from that accommodate every budget and
taste.
One
choice you will have to make is whether to stay on the island or
the mainland. Both are easily accessible whether by Star Ferry, or the
MTR, which only take 5 to 10 minutes each and are very reasonably
priced. The restaurants and nightlife are excellent on both sides
although some would claim that the island has more choice of nightlife.
Therefore the choice really boils down to which hotel you wish to stay
at, or the view that you would prefer to have. There is no doubt that
the view looking from Kowloon side (the mainland) to the Island is best,
the most difficulty though will be had on deciding the hotel. Below are
the reviews of most major hotels on Kowloon side, in Tsimshatsui, if you
would prefer to stay on the island read our reviews of
hotels on Hong
Kong island.
The
Eaton Hotel - Do not let
appearances fool you, as from the outside this hotel looks like any
other high rise, the lobby is unimpressive, but the rooms are very
different and are of the highest quality. The hotel located close to the
Jordan MTR (underground) station exit B1, is in a good location for
business or leisure travellers. The rooms come in four categories,
moderate, superior, deluxe and executive deluxe, and are all very nicely
furnished and comfortable with everything that you could need from a
hotel. All rooms use duvets, have satellite TV, an electronic in room
safe, a large working area with a window view, and the plug sockets
above the desk. They have 5 floors of non smoking rooms, 1
disabled room, a small yet adequate gym, and an outdoor swimming
pool that is heated and built in a Romanesque design. Our favourite room
in the hotel and one that we highly recommend is the deluxe, which is
built on a corner and has a very large oval bay window that runs from
floor to ceiling right around the room, offering you an amazing view and
a real sense of space. These rooms finish 01 and 10. The rooms are
really quite something. Great choice. See
pictures of this hotel, with special rates and more information here.
Peninsula
Hotel, Hong Kong - The Grande Dame of Hong
Kong, this is THE place to be seen and stay, if you can afford it.
The rooms are very well appointed with televisions in the bathroom,
telephones absolutely everywhere with speaker phone so if you do get
disturbed whilst in the bathtub hey presto no need to break your neck
clambering for the phone. They offer excellent television services with
complimentary movies on laser disc that would take at least a couple of
months to get through. They have some of the best food and beverage
outlets in HK, such as the Felix, which is the trendy bar/restaurant on
the top floor of the Hotel, an absolute must, even if you are staying at
the hotel you HAVE to go to the toilet at the Felix ! The swimming pool
and health club is out of this world, and again the quality of service
is outstanding, they will bring you a cold towel, water, and even Browns
of London Suntan lotion, to ensure that you don't burn ! The bathroom
amenities all come from Browns of London, and there is even two bars of
complimentary soap from Tiffany's in your bathroom. As if this were not
enough you can arrive in the luxury of a Rolls Royce, to or from the
airport for just HK$700 one way or HK$1,200 return this is a nice treat.
Just to cap all this off we have to mention the shoe shine service
(other hotels please take note). It is for a lot of people an
embarrassment to hand over shoes or even ask for them to be done, at the
Peninsula, you simply put them in the shoe shine cabinet press a button
and before you even knowing it they return cleaned ! Just make sure you
book a new wing room with harbour view. Wow. See
pictures and check
special rates and availability at this hotel.

Regal
Airport Hotel - The only airport hotel in Hong Kong.
======
Sheraton
- Next door to the Peninsula, a great
property which also commands great views of the harbour. The rooms are
well appointed, and with it being a member of the Starwood group, you
will be able to make points, and we all know what points make! While the
ceilings throughout the hotel did seem a little low to us, the
executive floor is definitely worth trying.
Miramar
- not far from the MRT off Nathan road,
this hotel offers some great rates from time to time, and is a great
option if you are on more of a budget. They have some good food
and beverage outlets here as well.
Nikko
- A great property, although one of the older Nikko's in Asia. It stands
out because of its famous "Nikko" service. The rooms have very
good views of the harbour and it is not too far from the MTR, just a
quick taxi ride away. Check special rates and availability at this
hotel.
Harbour
Plaza -
in Hung Hom is a little outside the main TST area, and is accessible
directly by boat from Central, Wanchai with the Hung Hom Star Ferry
terminal a quick 5 minute walk from the hotel. The rooms are very well
appointed with all the modern amenities, and the breakfast is out of
this world, serving the best bacon that we have come across in any hotel
in Asia. Check special rates and availability at this hotel.
Grand
Stanford Inter-Continental - in
Tsimshatsui East on Mody Road, too far from the MTR to walk but only a
quick 4 minute ride by taxi. The hotel has 5 different categories of
(standard) rooms - standard, superior, side harbour, and full harbour,
not including the suites and executive floor. The executive floor is
very comfortable with a library feel to it, and they serve breakfast,
afternoon tea and evening cocktails for a generous three hours from 5-30
to 8-30. A small swimming pool is found on the top floor and is adjacent
to a small yet adequate gym that opens from 6 am to 10 pm. Due to the
position of the hotel, a full harbour room will actually face a little
away from the Wanchai area (the famous view of the HK skyline) so we
actually recommend you to take one of the corner rooms, which is
actually classified as a side harbour room. The two best rooms in this
option are rooms ending in the numbers 34 and 35. These are actually
slightly larger than the other rooms as well, but they are also the
furthest away from the lifts ! The rooms are well appointed and offer
personalised service as you would expect from an Intercontinental, such
as a select choice of pillows depending upon your requirements. The
television system is very good and this hotel is one of the few hotels
in Hong Kong to offer the HBO channel - which means you can watch movies
without paying for them ! They also have the standard pay per view
movies, and cable and satellite programmes. The suites have separate
showers, and amenities from Nina Ricci, Paris. Their food and beverage
outlets are tremendous, the Belvedere, which serves modern European
cuisine and Mistral, for Italian, are excellent choices. Other outlets,
are equally as good, whether it be Chinese, Japanese, or even the coffee
shop. Check special rates and availability at this hotel.
Great
Eagle Hotel - now the Langham
Palace - A beautiful hotel,
that really tries to make a difference with the small touches, they
offer silent fax machines in the rooms, a choice of pillows, and
personalised stationary on the executive floor. Their gym is a site to
behold with views over the harbour, and their food and beverage outlets
are highly recommended. The service is very good. Check special rates
and availability at this hotel.
Inter-Continental
Hong Kong - Formerly The Regent Hong
Kong - Full review to come soon.
Royal
Plaza Hotel - Located above the Mongkok
train station, it is in an excellent location if you are going to be
travelling to China by train and being only minutes from the closest MTR
station allows easy access into Hong Kong. The hotel has seven different
room categories, two floors of executive floor (18 and 19), 2 non
smoking floors. Every room has tea and coffee making facilities, and
they have cleverly placed there plug sockets above the desk for easy
access. Every room also has a safe, and satellite TV. The hotel has 8
disabled rooms available. The swimming pool and gym here are excellent,
the gym is large and well equipped and the outdoor pool is one of the
longest in Hong Kong. The gym and pool is open from 6:30 to 10:30. The
executive floor offers guests the benefits of free local telephone
calls, breakfast in the coffee shop, complimentary cocktails and
afternoon tea.
