Cycling is a popular sport in Thailand. There are some
great routes just outside Bangkok, and even professional tour companies
that specialise in bike tours.
In Bangkok you can buy bikes from the
main shopping malls like Siam Paragon and Central World
(see:
Shopping in Bangkok) but they only stock basic quality mountain bikes, and a
very limited selection of again basic quality
accessories.
If you are looking for a more
specialist bike shop in Bangkok that can give you
professional advice and a good selection of quality
bikes and accessories such as spare parts, apparel,
helmets and everything else you may possibly need, then
there are two main specialist bike shops in Bangkok you
should know about - Probike and Cannondale.
Probike is located on Sarasin Road
adjacent to Lumpini Park, just a few minutes walk (or
very brief taxi ride) from the Rajdamri Skytrain
station. It is an outstanding shop that specialises in
Trek bikes - both mountain and road. Their range of
bikes is impressive with bikes that start below 20,000
and rise all the way up to professional models that cost
hundreds of thousands of Baht.
Probike also has an excellent
selection of accessories, spare parts, apparel (short
and jerseys of all sizes) and they can even service your
bike at a very reasonable price. They accept, cash, Visa
and MasterCard. Do not be afraid to ask for a discount,
the worse they can say is no, but you may be presently
surprised to learn that they will offer you a little off
the published prices.
Probike is open from 10am to 7pm
Monday - Friday but at the weekend it opens at 8:30am
and closes at 7pm on Saturday and 5pm on Sundays.
Definitely not a shop to miss if you are just new to
cycling or a seasoned pro.
The other major bike shop in Bangkok is
Cannondale (Thaicannasia) which (surprise, surprise) is the
official distributor of Cannondale bikes, clothing and accessories
in Thailand. Although this shop has a lot more of a homely, or
family-run business feel than Probike, it has an outstanding
selection of bikes - road and mountain - as well the most
impressive selection of clothing we have seen in Bangkok, as well
as all the needed accessories and spare parts etc. The large shop,
which does stock other products than just Cannondale, is located
between Sukhumvit and Rama IV roads on Sukhumvit 26 Road.
There are a few other bikes shops in Bangkok but
the two outlined above should have everything most riders will
need. Both have extremely knowledgeable staff who are more than
willing to help, give tips and guide you to making the right
purchase. Excellent English is spoken at both shops.
